Waller County Criminal District Attorney

On December 11, 2023, Sean G. Whittmore was sworn in as Criminal District Attorney of Waller County following his appointment by Gov. Greg Abbott. Whittmore was appointed following the resignation of Mr. Elton R. Mathis after nearly 17 years of service as D.A. of Waller County in order to serve as the first judge of Waller County Court at Law #2.

Sean brings over a decade of experience as a felony prosecutor. Sean is a married father of two smart and beautiful daughters, a life-long Republican raised in Texas, and a graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in History.  After graduating from Texas A&M, Sean attended Washburn University School of Law on an academic scholarship.  While still in school he began his career as a prosecutor, prosecuting misdemeanor cases for the Shawnee County District Attorney’s office on a temporary law license.  Upon graduating from law school, Sean returned to Texas, and after passing the Texas bar, began working as an Assistant District Attorney for Montgomery County.

After Montgomery County, Sean opened up his own law firm and practiced criminal defense in Montgomery, Harris, Walker, and Waller counties before Elton Mathis asked him to to join his office as a supervising attorney.  Sean served Waller County for two and a half years before returning to private practice when his second daughter was born.   Sean soon returned to being a prosecutor though and by joining the Texas Attorney General’s Office – Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.  There, Sean worked to combat fraud, waste, and abuse by medical companies cheating Texas taxpayers out of their hard earned money.  After nearly two years with the Attorney General, Elton asked Sean to return to the Waller County D.A.’s Office in February of 2020, where he led the felony trial division since he came home to the Waller County D.A.’s Office until he was appointed and sworn in as D.A..

Sean is dedicated to protecting the citizens of Waller County by seeing that criminals are held accountable.  With crime rising in Houston and Harris County, it is now more important than ever before that the justice system in Waller County has the steady hand of an experienced prosecutor to work hand in hand with our local law enforcement to keep the people of Waller County safe.  “I’ve tried everything from assault to capital murder. I’ve never lost a case in Waller County.  I think that shows that the juries of Waller County trust my judgment,” said Sean Whittmore.  “As your District Attorney, I continue to work tirelessly to put my experience, knowledge, and judgment to the task of protecting Waller County from the rising tide of crime.”
