Waller County Courthouse Memorial Tree
Today the Waller County Commissioners’ Court in conjunction with former County Commissioners Leroy Singleton and Frank D. Jackson (pictured left and right of sign respectively) and the members of the Waller County African American Heritage Committee (pictured from left, Judge Marian Elaine Jackson, D.A. Elton R. Mathis, Professor Grady M. Paris, Mayor of Prairie View Brian Rowland, Dr. Tiffany Gillum (co-chair), Commissioner Kendric Jones (co-chair), and County Judge Trey Duhon participated in the marking and commemorating of the tree planted on the courthouse lawn in 1998 dedicated to the enslaved people that were brought to Texas during the time of Stephen F. Austin and upon whose forced labor the Texas economy was dependent. This recognition is long overdue and marks the beginning of many positive projects the committee hopes to spur on toward a more unified and healthy community.
