District Attorney Mathis Resigns, Accepts Appointment as First Judge of County Court at Law Number Two Effective 9/1/23.

August 23, 2023

Dear Citizens of Waller County:

I am honored to accept the appointment from the Waller County Commissioners’ Court as the first judge of the newly created Waller County Court at Law Number Two effective September 1, 2023.   This community has allowed me to serve as district attorney for the last seventeen years.  You and the Commissioners’ Court have supported your D.A.’s office over and over again as we sought justice, and as we tried to keep our court system alive and well during times of upheaval and division not only in our county, but across the nation.  I am most proud of the reputation that our county has developed regionally as a place where murderers, child molesters and violent offenders know that they will face appropriate consequences.  I hope that the vast majority of you are proud of the office you helped create, and of the civil and criminal justice systems you uphold every time you show up for jury duty.

With the acceptance of this appointment on September 1, 2023, I have advised Governor Greg Abbott who will be responsible for appointing a temporary replacement until such time as an election can be held.   In the interim, the law vests the authority of the district attorney in my first assistant, Ms. Mia Magness, who is more than capable of overseeing the office in a professional and ethical manner.   Please give her your support until your new district attorney is appointed.   Waller County Court at Law Number Two is a court of general jurisdiction that can hear most cases involving probate, family law, criminal offenses and civil disputes.   I look forward to looking after the interests of its litigants, and doing my best to ensure a fair justice system for all is maintained here.  Thank you for your support in the past and in our future endeavors together.

Elton R. Mathis

Waller County Criminal District Attorney
